  5. Hi Carla

It is odd looking I agree!
It's a landmark known locally as White Nancy. 'White' because of the colour. 'Nancy' because, actually nobody knows.
It's been around on a hilltop above our town since Napoleonic times, when the site was a beacon. It was possibly built by the wealthy landowner as a summerhouse, as it had a door and benches inside.
It was then whitewashed and got the name White, then plastered and painted white. The door was bricked up in the 1930's due to vandalism.
It's much loved by the locals, who use it on stationery etc as 'our' logo'.
At special occasions anonymous people creep out in the dark and paint it:- as Father Christmas, or a Union Jack, at Remembrance Day it had a red poppy painted on it. In the wars it was painted camouflage green!
When it gets grubby the conservation volunteers (of which my husband is a member) put on their overalls and paint it white again.
At Christmas the town Brass Band play carols around it, and at New Year people let off fireworks around it.
When the Olympics are on in the UK I suspect someone will paint some Olympic rings or something on it.
Its always a secret who does the artwork. Nobody tells!
